Former Barcelona and Nigerian international Samuel Gbeng Okunowo joined VB sports yesterday 19th January 2009. Okunowo is a 29 year old defender who was discovered by Spanish giant Barcelona’s scouts in 1997 while he was playing for Nigerian club Shooting stars. Shootings stars lost African Champions cup to Zamalek in 1996 and a year later he was transferred to FC Barcelona for a fee of US$50,000.On August 18th 1998, Okunowo made his debut start to Barcelona against Real Mallorca under coach Louis Van Gaal. He started eight games and another six games as a substitute to Barcelona on their road to win the league, where they finished eleven points ahead of Real Madrid.He also started five of Barcelona’s six games in the champions’ league that season and faced clubs like Bayern Munich and Manchester United. In 1999-2000 season Barcelona loaned Okunowo to Portuguese side Benfica, where he played nine games and scored two.Barcelona terminated his contract in June 2002 after the player suffered a serious knee injury. In 2003 he joined Romanian champions Dinamo Bucharest on a free transfer but failed to adapt to Romanian championship. He played just two games and canceled his contract.Okunowo played 12 games for Nigerian under 17 team and 15 games for Under  20. For under 23 he played 18 games and 13 games for Nigeria senior national team from 1999 to 2000.

  1. At best this big gamble by VB Sports to a record fee. A player who is injury-prone and suffered a lot for a long stretch of time can be anything from a peripheral figure to mere entity. We are all waiting to see how he perform and match the money VB splashed on the ex-Barcelona man.

    Doesn’t it seem suspicious that the career data in this article ends in 2003 ? That was almost six years ago ! He has since played in Albania, Ucrania and has made trials in Norway and even with a seventh-league team in Spain some time ago, and was dismissed. Wish him all the best of luck !!

    I just saw Samuel play today … he is playing in the english 8th division for Waltham Forrest. He played in central midfield and looks to be back to full fitness.
